"Hook, Yarn & Needles Meeting UPDATE

Hi FOLKS. It was great seeing you on Saturday. As usual I left refreshed. The photo at the top is for the Afghan King--her name is Xenobia Bailey. She is a crochet artist out of NYC. Her artist blog provided me the inspiration to get moving on developing and managing a blog for us-"Washington DC Fiber Arts Collective". I will share photos of her art in the second post.I didn't mention the blog and hosting it via CreativesDC on Sat. because I forgot. In the mist of the crocheting and the talking…See More

Profile Information

What is your interest in the CreativesDC beta community?
Coordinator for the Washington DC Fiber Arts Collective. Doing outreach to inform the community about the new structure and share collective activities.
How are you using your imagination and original ideas to enrich our economy and culture in DC, and beyond? Or, how would you like it to?
The group is free and open to anyone in the city who would like to learn to knit or crochet. many people in the city are on limited incomes and can not afford the fee charged to learn a skill that was passed down through families or taught to friends by friends. The collective also has a project that is reaching out to families who have lost children to violence.
Bio (html accepted)
The Washington DC Fiber Arts Collective has become the organization for the Hook, Yarns & Needles knitting and crochet group which has been meeting at the Martin L. King Library on the 1st. and 4th Saturday of the month since 2005. My name is Deirdre Wright and coordinate and facilitate the group's activities.

The group continues to meet on the 4th Saturday of each month at the MLK Library in Room 221 from 12 to 4 pm. The group also schedules a middle of the month knitting/crochet session at a bookstore in the DC area. We also continue to take trips together. We recently attended the DC Bead Society bead show and are again planning to attend the Stitches Neddlework show in Baltimore this fall.

The group continues to teach anyone whom desires to learn to knit and/or crochet. The group also continues to facilitate "The National Afghan Memorial Project for Child Victims of Murder-"WRAPPED IN LOVE"". This project presently teaches signifigant others to knit/crochet so a memorial afghan can be made for the deceased child. The project has also expanded to include "The Granny Square Project". A granny square will be made for each child in the district who has lost their life to murder.

Please feel free to contact me for more details and if you are interested in learning to knit or crochet.
