The Black Exhibit at District of Columbia Arts Center (DCAC)

November 20, 2009 from 7pm to 9pm
The second BADC exhibit this year explores Black as more than a color. In 2008 BADC accepted an invitation from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa to mount an exhibit titled Black Migrations, which explored the exodus of Black people from the South. The late artist, Harlee Little had worked with Luther College in planning the exhibit. He envisioned a Black exhibit in Washington DC but this time to further explore Black as a people and as a theme, going beyond traditional concepts that the word…See More

Profile Information

What is your interest in the CreativesDC beta community?
I am always interested in cultural activities and meeting creative people.
How are you using your imagination and original ideas to enrich our economy and culture in DC, and beyond? Or, how would you like it to?
I would like my creativity to influence how people see and perceive the world around them. I was taught that beauty surrounds us but that too many people only experience the obvious.
Bio (html accepted)
Daniel T. Brooking is a native Washingtonian. He has participated in the cultural life of the city for many years.

Currently, he is producing a series of original computer generated masks. “Masks, whether the ones we wear to face the world everyday or the ones we wear on special occasions, have a life of their own. They hold power and mystery and I find them fascinating. After designing and constructing masks using traditional art tools and supplies, I decided to expand into the field of digital art. None of the masks stand alone, they are part of a pantheon of gods and goddesses, kings and queens of heaven, oracles and forces benevolent and sinister. These masks have been influenced by my travels to Africa, Asia, South America, the Caribbean, the Middle East and the American west”. Some of the masks were developed from digitized images of human skin. He is a member of Black Artists of DC (BADC).

ARTIST STATEMENT
First of all, I do this for me! My work allows me to open doors in my mind and communicate with my dreams; to make hard copies that I can hold and evaluate. As a Black Artists of DC member I have the opportunity to interact with experienced artists from many fields, to be exposed to new techniques, to teach what I have learned and to learn from others. I follow the spirit of Sankofa: looking to the past to bring something forward, change it and make it new.

I explore and create art with the aid of the computer. My work is often hard edged because I like images to be well defined. None of my work is sketched or preplanned. I may appear to simply start but only because I have been jarred out of the day-to-day world by an intriguing idea.

I gain inspiration from anything that ignites the senses; food, drink, art, architecture, sculpture, music, dance, other artists and light: in all of its variances. For me, light and color create an intimate dance. I’m searching for a new road and I’m not afraid of all the side streets I take to get there. An artist should never limit his or herself to a particular genre; learn as much as you can, do as much as you can and never stop.
